PIAA Basketball Championsh­ips get underway this weekend

The PIAA Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Championsh­ips are set to get underway this weekend. Boys’ first round games are scheduled for Friday, with girls’ first round games following on Saturday.

In the 1A boys’ championsh­ip, D9 1A champion Elk County Catholic (25-2) will host District 7 fifth place team Neighborho­od Academy (20-5) in a 7 p.m. game at Elk County Catholic High School.

In other 1A boys’ action, D9 1A runner-up Union (14-12) will host District 5 third place team Turkeyfoot Valley (17-9) at Union High School in Rimersburg at 7 p.m., D9 1A third place team DuBois Central Catholic (178) will face District 6 runner-up Harmony (22-3) at 7 p.m. at Harmony High School in Westover, D9 1A fourth place team Cameron County (17-8) will take on District 6 champion Portage (25-2) at Portage High School at 7 p.m., and D9 1A fifth place team Clarion (17-9) will face District 7 champion Imani Christian Academy (18-6) at 7:30 p.m. at North Allegheny High School in Wexford.

Also in the bottom half of the bracket, District 10 champion Farrell (20-4) will host District 7 fourth place team Geibel Catholic (17-8) in a 7 p.m. game at Farrell High School, District 7 runner-up Union (22-3) will host District 10 runner-up Kennedy Catholic (13-10) in a 7 p.m. game at Union High School in New Castle, and District 5 runner-up Southern Fulton (19-6) will face District 7 third place team Carlynton High School (17-7) at McConnells­burg High School at 7 p.m.

In the 1A girls’ championsh­ip, District 9 1A girls’ runner-up Elk County Catholic (23-4) will host District 5 runner-up Northern Bedford (17-8) in a 2 p.m. game on Saturday at Elk County Catholic High School.

Also on Saturday, District 9 1A girls’ champion Otto-Eldred (23-2) will host District 7 fifth place team Monessen (176) in a 3 p.m. game at Otto-Eldred High School in Duke Center, D9 1A third place team DuBois Central Catholic (14-12) will travel to Mercer High School for a 3 p.m. game against District 10 champion Jamestown (5-18), D9 fourth place team North Clarion (20-6) will travel to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown for a 2 p.m. game against District 5 champion Berlin Brothersva­lley (20-5), and District 9 fifth place team Clarion (11-14) will travel to Union High School in New Castle for a 2 p.m. game against District 7 champion Union (18-6).

Also in the bottom half of the bracket, District 6 champion Williamsbu­rg (26-1) will take on District 7 fourth place team St. Joseph (20-6) at 4 p.m. at Claysburg High School, District 7 runner-up Aquinas Academy (16-9) will face District 6 third place team Juniata Valley (16-8) at 2 p.m. at Deer Lakes High School, and District 6 runnerup Bishop Guilfoyle (14-11) will take on District 7 third place team Bishop Canevin (12-8) at 6 p.m. at Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona.

Fans are reminded that tickets for all PIAA playoff games must be purchased online and will not be sold at the door. Links to purchase tickets can be found on the brackets on the PIAA website. In the event that a game is postponed, tickets will be accepted on the reschedule­d date. Refunds will only be issued in the event that a game is canceled.
