Waylon Wehler records 100th career win, to wrestle for third place

St. Marys Area senior Waylon Wehler recorded his 100th career win on Friday afternoon at the PIAA AA Wrestling Championsh­ips in Hershey and will wrestle for third place.

Wehler began the day in consi round 2 in the 172-pound weight class, where he faced Lackawanna Trail’s Robbie Schneider. Wehler won the match by a 5-1 decision.

Following a scoreless first period, Wehler started the second period on the bottom, using an escape and then a takedown to go up 3-0. Schneider was on the bottom to start the third period and got on the board with an escape, but Wehler countered with another takedown with two seconds remaining for the 5-1 win.

Advancing to consi round 3, Wehler faced Towanda’s Mason Higley, winning by fall in 1:36.

Wehler scored the opening takedown 14 seconds into the match for a 2-0 lead. Starting the second period on the bottom, Wehler increased his lead to 4-0 with a reversal before coming up with the pin.

In consi round 4, Wehler found himself up against Bishop McDevitt’s Lucas Lawler. Wehler won the match by a 7-2 decision.

Following a scoreless first period, Lawler started the second period on the bottom and used a reversal to take a 2-0 lead. However, Wehler countered with a reversal of his own to knot the score at 2-all. Wehler then started the third period on the bottom and used a reversal and three back points to get the 7-2 win.

Advancing to consi round 5, Wehler faced off against Reynolds, Jalen Wagner. Wehler won the match by a 2-1 decision. Penalty points decided the outcome as Wehler gave up one to Wagner with four seconds left in the opening period to put him on the board. Starting the second period on the bottom, Wehler used an escape to knot the score at 1-all. Wehler was then awarded a penalty point in the third period and held on for the 2-1 win.

Wehler will wrestle Fort Cherry’s Braedon Welsh in the third place match.
