Local wrestlers have strong showing at states
The St Marys-based Titan wrestling club's students had a strong showing at this year's high school state tournament.
Pennsylvania's state tournament is annually considered the toughest tournament in the country to qualify for and to place at. This year, the club had seven representatives appear in Hershey and all wrestled well, some will be back next year and three are returning with medals.
Senior and St Marys Area student Waylon Wehler had a great tournament, finishing third in the state at 172 pounds. He did it the hard way too. Dropping his first match to a returning state champion, tied 1-1 deep in the last period, Garcia hit a move to take the preliminary match. Then Waylon had to fight through the consolation rounds to place, which he did. Waylon was dominating over the next two days going undefeated though the next six matches and finishing next to Garcia on the podium.
Other Titan wrestlers who placed include Brockway product Weston Pisarchick, who finished third as well, at 114 pounds. Gavin Thompson, also of Brockway, wrestled at 285 pounds and also grabbed a medal, landing fifth on the podium.
Local and Titan wrestlers Aiden Beimel, Jayden Wehler, and Ben Reynolds, each of St Marys Area, had strong showings, and being underclassmen, set a course to return next year. Out-of-town student Reece Bechakas of Kane also had a good showing at 152 pounds.
Titan Club President Adam Resch stated, “I am proud of all of our kids, those guys all earned their success through hard work. There are guys training hard here who are still unknown but will be in the paper next year.”
The Titan club congratulates its high school wrestlers on a great season and is now turning to preparing its younger students for Junior States. As it is said, “Wrestling season is never over.”
