Johnsonburg holds Memorial Day ceremony in Market Street gazebo
JOHNSONBURG- A Memorial Day ceremony was held in Johnsonburg Monday morning beginning around 9 a.m. at the Market Street gazebo.
This was organized by members of the Johnsonburg Community Trust (JCT).
The program began after Johnsonburg Area High School (JAHS) junior Julia Defranco sang the Star Spangled Banner followed by the mayor of Johnsonburg Kyle Paget welcomed all attendees and introduced other dignitaries. Bob Johnson also gave an opening invocation.
The servicemen’s detail then moved the American flag to half staff near the Johnsonburg Veterans’ Memorial and placed a wreath on the headstone that commemorates all veterans who have served in the Johnsonburg community.
JAHS students Marcus Crowe, Julia Jones, Aaron Myers, and Emily
Peluso read each of their winning pieces on what service men and women mean to them in the local Johnsonburg community and around the country, among other sub points about patriotism and stories from family members that served as well.
Crowe was the winner of the American Legion Scholarship, while Jones,
Myers, and Peluso were each Veteran’s Day essay winners.
A rendition of ‘God Bless America’ was sung by Ginette LaStrapes prior to the essay readings.
The morning’s events wrapped up with a roll call of local veterans who lost their lives in action along with deceased veterans of the community. The burial detail concluded the service with the playing of “Taps.”
This Memorial Day service gave a stark reminder of the countless sacrifices of service men and women that are within and have been in our local communities and those who have served across the country.
