Wage schedule shows increase to city manager position
ST. MARYS - A recent revision to the City of St. Marys wage schedule shows an increase to the city manager’s salary now updated to $100,000.
The manager’s annual salary was previously approved at $91,980 for 2024. On February 19, 2024 the wage schedule was revised with the only changes made being to the manager’s current wage, an increase of $10,699.
In December, St. Marys City Council officially approved a balanced budget of $8.85 million which included an increase of one mil. This increase allows for a .3 mils increase to emergency medicine services via the St. Marys Area Ambulance Service and .7 mils to the fire protection fund for the Crystal Fire Department.
The city manager undergoes an annual evaluation conducted by city council. This was completed in October.
In December city council was presented the wage schedule to review. Former Councilwoman Sally Geyer requested the item be tabled for a future meeting in order to allow council members to review the wage schedule, as she stated they were only presented the schedule the evening of the meeting. Geyer explained she previously requested the wage schedule with no response.
“Things should not be put on the table the day of the meeting to vote on,” Geyer said.
She also voiced her concern over having to potentially raise taxes for salary increases while local residents are being laid off.
Councilman Ned Jacob agree with Geyer noting they have not had a good discussion about it as it’s “been kicked down the road.” He recommended discussing the wage schedule during a work session before voting on it.
Jacob stated he thought last year all employees were brought up to the proper pay scale. “Now we’re giving 5% raises over what the state recommends at 3.2% which we should be in line with,” Jacob noted in December.
