Dutchmen edged by DuBois Area Beavers in home opener

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen and DuBois Area Beavers faced off at Berwind Park on Wednesday afternoon in a matchup that was scoreless until the fourth inning. The game headed into the final inning tied at 3-all, but DuBois was able to push through another run and then kept St. Marys from answering in the bottom of the inning to take home a 4-3 win.

Ben Paul started on the mound for the Dutchmen and worked the first four innings, giving up five hits, walking two, and striking out four. Mason Nicklas took over for the next two innings, giving up three hits and walking five. Louis Nedzinski worked the final inning.

Tycen Roy had a double for DuBois’ only extra-base hit.

Roy and Samson Deeb shared time on the mound for the Beavers. Roy worked the first five innings, giving up two hits and striking out four, and Deeb took over for the final two innings, giving up three hits, walking one, and striking out three.

All of St. Marys Area’s hits were singles.

DuBois was able to put a pair of runners on base in the opening inning as Boston Graham hit a one-out single and Trey Wingard walked with two outs to put runners on the corners. However, with Kaden Clark at bat,

Wingard was caught stealing second for the third out.

The Dutchmen were also able to get their first base runner in the home half of the inning as Ben Reynolds led off by reaching base on an error, but a double play and a flyout kept the game scoreless.

Batters for both teams went down in order in the second inning.

Roy led off the top of the third with a double for DuBois, with Davey Aughenbaug­h entering the game as a courtesy runner. Aughenbaug­h advanced to third on a wild pitch with Deeb at bat. Deeb ended up singling on a ground ball, but Aughenbaug­h was out at home trying to score. Deeb advanced to second on the play but was left stranded.

St. Marys’ batters went down in order in the home half of the inning.

Danny Dixon led off the top of the fourth with a single for DuBois, and then Kaden Clark joined him on base after being hit by a pitch with one out. Following a flyout, a single by Ricky Clark scored Dixon to give DuBois a 1-0 lead. Roy walked to load the bases, but a strikeout prevented the Beavers from pushing through any additional runs.

With one out in the home half of the inning, Tysen Beimel and Lucas Bauer hit back-to-back singles, and then Beimel scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 1-all.

DuBois retook the lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth.

With two outs, Dixon walked and Wingard singled. A single by Kaden Clark scored Dixon, and then Wingard scored on a single by Noah Farrell to make the score 3-1.

Batters for St. Marys went down in order in the bottom of the inning, and then DuBois left Graham stranded following a two-out walk in the top of the sixth.

Back-to-back singles by Reynolds and Beimel, and a walk by Bauer, loaded the bases for St. Marys with no outs in the bottom of the sixth. Following a strikeout, Reynolds scored on a fielder’s choice, and then a twoout single by Cameron Coudriet scored Beimel to tie the game at 3-all.

Wingard and Kaden Clark drew back-toback walks to start off the top of the seventh. Wingard advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Farrell to give the Beavers a 4-3 advantage.

Batters for St. Marys went down in order in the bottom of the inning to send DuBois home with the 4-3 win.

The Dutchmen are scheduled to be back in action at home today in a 4:30 p.m. game against Punxsutawn­ey.
