Lady Dutch bring home 15-6 win over DuBois Area

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team was back in action on the road on Wednesday afternoon, bringing home a 15-6 win over the DuBois Area Lady Beavers.

Molly Hanslovan led the Lady Dutch with an inside-the-park home run and a double in the game. Gianna Surra also doubled.

Audrey Hale and Morgan Pasternak each hit a home run for DuBois and Ava Baronick had a double.

Avery Eckels went the distance in the circle for the Lady Dutch giving up 11 hits, walking two, and striking out five.

Baronick and Abigail Kalgren each saw action pitching for DuBois. Baonick started the game and worked the first six innings, giving up 12 hits and walking 13. Kalgren worked the final inning, giving up one hit and striking out two.

Hanslovan led off the game by reaching base on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jianna Gerg. Kaylen Eozzo joined Hanslovan on base with a single, but an infield fly and a popout left both stranded.

DuBois pushed through the first run of the game with two outs in the home half of the inning. Back-to-back two-out singles by Pasternak and Hale gave the Lady Beavers a pair of base runners, and then Pasternak scored on an error with Baronick at bat to make the score 1-0.

St. Marys responded with their first run in the top of the second.

Kelsie Fledderman and Giuliana Muccio drew back-to-back walks to open the inning, and then Fledderman scored as Sidney Reider reached base on an error with one out, knotting the score at 1-all.

Baronick led off the bottom of the inning with a double for DuBois, but the next three batters went down in order.

The top of the third was a big eight-run inning for the Lady Dutch, giving St. Marys the lead for good.

Eozzo and Surra drew back-to-back walks to open the inning, with Taylor Gornati entering the game as a courtesy runner for Surra. A single by Eckels scored Eozzo and moved Gornati to third. Alison Mertz entered the game as a courtesy runner for Eckels. Fledderman walked to load the bases, and then Muccio walked to score Gornati and keep the bases loaded. Another walk, this time issued to Zoe Romanic, scored Mertz and kept the bases loaded.

Following an infield fly for the first out, a double by Hanslovan scored Fledderman, Muccio, and Romanic to make the score 7-1 in favor of the Lady Dutch.

After a groundout, Eozzo walked to join Hanslovan on base, and then Hanslovan scored on a single by Surra. A single by Eckels scored Eozzo, making the score 9-1 as a flyout brought DuBois back up to bat.

The Lady Beavers went down in order in the home half of the inning.

Muccio and Romanic drew back-to-back walks to lead off the top of the fourth, and then Muccio scored as Reider hit into a fielder’s choice that erased Romanic at second for the first out. Gerg also drew a twoout walk in the inning, but St. Marys was unable to push through any additional runs.

Pasternak singled to lead off the bottom of the inning and then a home run by Hale trimmed St. Marys Area’s lead to 103.

Baronick followed that up with a single, and then Jordan McGranor singled with one out. A groundout by Layden Mooney allowed courtesy runner Addi Lilja to score, making the score 10-4. Brielle Gray also got on base in the inning after drawing a walk, but a popout prevented DuBois from further cutting into St. Marys’ lead.

Surra led off the top of the fifth with a single but courtesy runner Kalani Clinger was erased in a double play. Gornati and Muccio drew backto-back walks, but a flyout left both stranded.

Pasternak walked with one out for DuBois in the bottom of the inning but was also left stranded.

A one-out insidethe-park home run by Hanslovan in the top of the sixth made the score 11-4 in favor of the Lady Dutch. Following a groundout, Eozzo singled and then scored on a double by Surra, making the score 12-4.

McGranor singled with one out in the bottom of the inning for DuBois, but a strikeout and a groundout left her stranded.

St. Marys loaded the bases in the top of the seventh as Fledderman singled, Muccio was hit by a pitch, and Romanic singled. A single by Sophia Surra scored Fledderman, and then Hanslovan singled to score Muccio. With Gerg at bat, Romanic scored on a passed ball. Eozzo reached base on a twoout error to load the bases, but a pair of strikeouts brought DuBois up to bat for the final time.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Pasternak hit a solo home run. Hale followed that up with a single and then a single by Baronick resulted in the game’s final run as a strikeout gave St. Marys the 15-6 victory.

The Lady Dutch (2-0) are scheduled to return to action on Monday, April 1 against Wellsville at Heindl Field in DuBois in a 1 p.m. game.
