The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen baseball team held a 1-0 lead against the Punxsutawney Chucks headed into the final inning of a close game at Berwind Park on Thursday afternoon. However, that lead would not hold as Punxsy rallied to push through give runs in the top of the fifth to leave with a 5-1 victory.

Cameron Coudriet got the start for the Dutchmen and struck out eight in six innings of work while giving up two hits and walking three. Tysen Beimel took over on the mound for the final inning and gave up two hits and walked three.

Nevin Day started on the mound for the Chucks and worked the first six innings, giving up eight hits, walking one, and striking out 12. Coy Martino took over for the final inning, walking one and striking out one.

Stellar pitching by both Coudriet and Day stifled both offenses early.

Martino recorded the first hit of the game when he led off the top of the second with a single for the Chucks, and Luke Miller joined him by drawing a oneout walk, but both were left stranded.

The Dutchmen also got their first base runner in the bottom of the second inning as Jackson Vollmer led things off by reaching on an error. However, the next three batters went down in order.

The next batter to reach base was Joey Lease for the Dutchmen to lead off the bottom of the third. Ben Reynolds recorded St. Marys’ first hit of the game with a one-out single to join him, and then a two-out single by Lucas Bauer loaded the bases. Vollmer then singled to score Lease, putting the Dutchmen on the board leading 1-0.

Day singled to lead off the top of the fourth but was left stranded. Carter Redmond hit a one-out double for St. Marys in the bottom of the inning but a pair of strikeouts prevented him from advancing.

Bauer and Vollmer hit back-to-back twoout singles for St. Marys in the bottom of the fifth, but Bauer ended up getting tagged out by Martino to end the inning.

A pair of two-out walks put Day and Martino on base for the Chucks in the top of the sixth, but a strikeout preserved St. Marys’ 1-0 lead. Coudriet led off the bottom of the inning with a single but was left stranded as the next three batters went down in order.

Beimel took over on the mound for the top of the seventh and walked the first three batters, putting Miller, Brody Stouffer, and Ty Limrick on base for the Chucks. A groundout by Donnie Bender scored Miller to tie the game at 1-all. A single by Maddox Hetrick scored Stouffer to give the Chucks a 2-1 lead. Limrick advanced to third on the play to put runners on the corners. A groundout by Cooper Hallman scored Limrick. Day was hit by a pitch, and then a double by Martino scored both Hetrick and Day to make the score 5-1 as a flyout brought St. Marys back up to bat for the final time.

Mason Nicklas led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, and then Punxsy made a pitching change, with Martino taking over on the mound. Following a strikeout, Nicklas stole second and third with Beimel at bat, and Beimel ended up drawing a walk to put runners on the corners. A double play ended the game with the Chucks securing the 5-1 win.
