Lady Dutch blank Clearfield for 12-0 six-inning win

After a slow start, the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch scored runs in the third through sixth innings to bring home a 12-0 six-inning victory over the Clearfield Lady Bison on Thursday afternoon.

Avery Eckels went the distance in the circle for St. Marys Area, tossing a two-hitter while walking one and striking out three.

Joelle Henry and Megan Wisor spent time in the circle for Clearfield. Henry worked the first four innings, giving up four hits, walking three, and striking out one. Wisor took over for the final two innings, giving up six hits and walking four.

Batters for St. Marys went down in order in the top of the first, and Ruby Singleton recorded the first hit of the game with a leadoff double for the Lady Bison in the home half of the inning. The next three batters went down in order to leave Singleton stranded.

Eckels hit a one-out single in the top of the second, and Giuliana Muccio drew a two-out walk, but a popout prevented the Lady Dutch from getting on the board.

After sending batters for Clearfield down in order in the bottom of the second, St. Marys finally got on the board with three runs in the top of the third.

Sidney Reider led off the inning with a double and then Addison Beimel singled to join her on base. With one out, Gianna Surra was intentiona­lly walked to load the bases. Ava Villella entered the game as a courtesy runner for Surra. A single by Kaylen Eozzo scored both Reider and Beimel, and then Villella scored on a groundout by Eckels to give the Lady Dutch a 3-0 lead.

Clearfield left a runner stranded in the bottom of the inning as Singleton hit a two-out double.

Muccio walked to lead off the top of the fourth, and then Taylor Gornati reached on an error to join her on base. A groundout by Reider scored Muccio, and then Gornati scored on a groundout by Beimel, increasing St. Marys Area’s lead to 5-0.

Clearfield was once again kept off of the board in the home half of the inning.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Eozzo singled and Eckels and Kelsie Fledderman drew back-to-back walks, loading the bases. A single by Muccio scored Eozzo, and then both courtesy runner Sophia Surra and Fledderman scored as Reider reached base on an error with two outs. With Beimel at bat, Muccio scored on a passed ball, making the score 9-0.

Clearfield left another runner stranded in the bottom of the inning.

Eozzo led off the top of the sixth with a single but was erased at second as Eckels hit into a fielder’s choice. Sophia Surra once again entered the game to run for Eckels. Fledderman singled to join Surra on base. Muccio hit into a fielder’s choice, erasing Surra at home for the second out. An inside-the-park home run by Gornati also scored Fledderman and Muccio, making the score 12-0.

Three straight groundouts sent Clearfield’s batters down in order in the bottom of the inning, ending the game with St. Marys Area recording the 12-0 six-inning win.

The Lady Dutch are next scheduled to be in action on Wednesday when they host Punxsutawn­ey in a 4:30 p.m. game at the St. Marys Area High School softball field.
