The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen tennis team was back in action on the road on Friday against the DuBois Area Beavers. St. Marys Area won the match by a score of 4-2.

“It was a memorable match tonight,” said St. Marys Area head coach Tim Henry. “Both teams were not at full strength but still produced some high quality tennis.”

The teams split the singles matches, with St. Marys winning at first and third singles and DuBois winning at second and fourth singles.

At first singles, Dutchman Luke Anderson defeated DuBois’ Brohm Hemke 6-1, 6-3.

At second singles, the Beavers’ Jay Parekh won 6-4, 0-6 (10-6) against SMA’s Dawson Krug.

At third singles, St. Marys Area’s Blake Hoffman won 6-1, 6-2 against DuBois’ Ben Gribik.

At fourth singles, DuBois’ Landon Pawl defeated SMA’s Dean Rakieski 6-3, 6-2.

St. Marys won both doubles matches to come away with the overall win.

At first doubles, Anderson and Krug teamed up for an 8-3 win against Hemke and Parekh. At second doubles, Hoffman teamed up with Casey Young for a 9-8 (7-4) win against Gribik and Pawl.

“For the Dutchmen, Luke stayed steady in picking up wins at one singles and doubles,” Henry said. “Krug’s match versus Parekh was a battle of wills and nice shot making. Parekh just made fewer errors to earn the win in the tiebreaker. Blake continues to play commanding, solid tennis. His intensity and firepower earned us a point in his three singles spot and anchored our second doubles team. That match with Young was the deciding one of the night. The Dutchmen were down two match points at 7-8 and came back to win. Young and Hoffman were able to elevate their games while under score pressure. At one doubles, Krug and Anderson finished the night’s matches and found a higher level of consistency to cement the win.”

There was no match at third doubles as both teams forfeited.

“(It was a) well contested battle between two teams that might meet next week in the D9 team semis,” Henry said.
