Detective who was by Oswald has surgery
Jim Leavelle, 91, the famous former Dallas homicide detective, is recovering well from surgery to remove an eye, according to his daughter Karla Leavelle.
Leavelle is best remembered as the man in the light suit and Stetson who was escorting Lee Harvey Oswald when the assassin of President John F. Kennedy was himself shot on Nov. 24, 1963. Leavelle’s shocked expression was immortalized in a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo of the killing.
Karla Leavelle said her father was visiting her Virginia home on Nov. 19 when he injured his eye in a fall. He stayed through Thanksgiving and returned to Dallas on Sunday. The surgery was performed Monday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.
