Texas A&M pledge throws gem for Forney
Texas A&M baseball pledge Mason Englert pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 11 to lead Forney to a 4-0 win over Highland Park in a key District 15-5A game Tuesday.
Forney (19-4, 9-0), ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 5A by txhighschoolbaseball.com, increased its lead in 15-5A to two games over Highland Park (15-10, 7-2). The teams meet again at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Highland Park.
Logan Baker’s two-run single in the top of the fourth gave Forney a 2-0 lead. Forney added two runs in the seventh, with a two-out single by Ty Bowring driving in the final run.
Trinity Cannon, Rockwall-Heath: Hit two home runs, scored three runs and had five RBIs as District 11-6A leader Rockwall-Heath beat Tyler John Tyler 18-0 in three innings. Rockwall-Heath (19-5, 10-1) scored 12 runs in the first inning, then Cannon and Madison Leggett hit back-to-back home runs in the second.
Tatum Boyd, Plano West: Pitched a two-hit shutout, homered and drove in two runs to lead the state’s ninth-ranked 6A team to a 5-0 victory over McKinney Boyd. Plano West (22-3, 9-2) remained tied with Plano East for first place in District 6-6A. The teams play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Plano East.
Caraline Woodall, Keller: The Indiana pledge fell a home run short of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with six RBIs as the state’s 24th-ranked 6A team beat Keller Central 15-2. Woodall had five RBIs — on a threerun triple and two-run single — during a 10-run fourth inning. Iowa state pledge Kasey Simpson tripled and homered as Keller (19-4-1, 8-1) remained a half-game behind 3-6A leader Keller Timber Creek.
Rylee Layton, Keller Timber Creek: Pitched a four-hit shutout and went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the state’s eighth-ranked 6A team to a 13-0 rout of Haltom in five innings.
Lacy Mann, Arlington Martin: Pitched a four-inning perfect game and struck out eight as District 4-6A leader Martin beat North Crowley 16-0 and remained one game ahead of Mansfield.
Taryn Huston, McKinney North: Hit a walk-off two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give McKinney North a 3-2 win over Prosper.
Carson Ulshafer, The Colony: Was 2 for 2 with two RBIs in a 4-2 win over Prosper, ranked No. 2 in the state in 5A. Brett Clair pitched a four-hitter for The Colony (16-9, 6-3). Prosper (22-4-1, 7-2) suffered its second straight loss and fell into a tie with McKinney North and Little Elm for first place in District 14-5A. Blake Mayfield, Flower Mound Marcus: Pitched a no-hitter and struck out eight as the state’s 13th-ranked 6A team beat Flower Mound 1-0. Connor Martin drove in the only run with a two-out single in the second inning. Russell Smith, Midlothian: The TCU signee threw a no-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 7-0 win against Mansfield Timberview. Pepper Jones, McKinney: Pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out 11, in an 8-0 win over District 6-6A leader Allen. McKinney moved within one game of first place. Tyler Riebock, Rockwall: Homered and three RBIs as the state’s 11th-ranked 6A team beat Tyler Lee 5-0 and remained tied with Rockwall-Heath for first in 11-6A. Luke Scaggs, Frisco Wakeland: Struck out nine while allowing two hits in six scoreless innings as the state’s eighth-ranked 5A team beat Frisco Reedy 7-0.
Tony Garza, South Grand Prairie: The freshman pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win and was 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs as District 7-6A leader SGP (17-7-1, 9-0) beat Irving Nimitz 11-0.
