This year’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again film prequel-sequel goes back in time, but if you really want to go back to where the fun started, check out the original Mamma Mia!, presented by Brick Road Theatre Oct. 19-28 at the Courtyard Theater in Plano.

Yes, long before there was a hit 2008 Mamma Mia! film, there was the popular 2001 Broadway ABBA jukebox musical of the same name with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus songs like “Take a Chance on Me,” “Dancing Queen” and “The Winner Takes It All.”

For Brick Road Theatre, Patty Breckenridge stars as Donna, a woman in a Greek island paradise who is preparing for the wedding of her daughter, Sophie, played by Morgan Maxey. Donna has never told Sophie who her father is. Sophie secretly invites three men from her mother’s past who might be her dad, with the aim of identifying her father. Cara Statham Serber and Sara Shelby-martin play Donna’s best friends.

Fresh off Lyric Stage’s Newsies, Katharine Quinn directs, with music direction by Isaac Leaverton. ■ Oct. 19-28 at Courtyard Theater, 1509 H Ave., Plano. $30. brickroadtheatre.org.
