Dis­turbed by ‘com­fort’

Re: “‘We take com­fort’ — Ex-of­fi­cer’s mur­der in­dict­ment relieves slain man’s fam­ily,” Dec. 1 news story.

“We take com­fort” was your head­line on this ar­ti­cle. Botham Jean’s fam­ily takes com­fort in the po­lice­woman’s mur­der in­dict­ment.

For me there is some­thing dis­turb­ing that some peo­ple would “take com­fort” in the tragic plight of an­other hu­man be­ing. What could be seen as a tragic ac­ci­dent has be­come an ex­pres­sion of racial re­venge.

How has it come about that the pos­si­bil­ity of grace is re­placed by the real­ity of hate?
