Brandi Carlile at the Bomb Factory

- Kelly Dearmore

Although she wasn’t the biggest winner at this year’s Grammy Awards, Brandi Carlile has emerged from that night as one of its top breakout stars. The folk-rocking Washington state native snagged three of the five trophies she was up for, including the prize for Americana album, for her stunning By the Way, I Forgive You LP. But it was her majestic, show-stealing performance of song-of-the-year nominee “The Joke” that powered Carlile to a massive increase in sales and streaming numbers in the hours and days following the February broadcast. Her longtime fans will counter that newbies should’ve known about her all along, given that she has now produced a handful of Grammyworthy albums since her debut in 2005.
