Shows from DBDT in Dallas, Eyakkam Dance in Plano
The premiere of a new work commissioned from New York choreographer Nijawwon Matthews, From Within, described as “a transformative experience from the trauma of betrayal to self-healing,” highlights Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Director’s Choice shows at the Wyly Theatre. The program also includes the ballet Bounce by Ballet Austin artistic director Stephen Mills and Furtherance from former Alvin Ailey dancer Kirven Douthit-boyd. Among the dancers are Claude Alexander III and Sean J. Smith, celebrating their 10th season with the company.
In Plano, Eyakkam Dance Company draws on the Indian classical form of
Bharatanatyam with production numbers from the last 80 years of Tamil cinema in Konjum Salangai 2.0. The re-created song-and-dance sequences, complete with costumes inspired by the originals, feature 25 performers, including guest artists from Cleveland and Chicago.
