- Paul O’donnell

Great Lakes Cheese Co., an Ohio-based manufacturer of natural and processed cheeses, will invest nearly $185 million in a new packaging and distribution center in Abilene, creating 500 jobs.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced the expansion project Friday and said the state will assist the company with a $3 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund. The company could also receive $33.3 million in city incentives, based on a proposal by the Development Corporation of Abilene, according to the Abilene Reporter News.

A study commissioned by the city’s development corporation projects that Great Lakes Cheese will generate $1.3 billion for Abilene’s economy over 10 years.

Founded in 1958, the company operates eight plants in five states and supplies cheese nationwide.

Great Lakes Cheese is one of the largest privately owned companies in the U.S., with annual sales of $3.3 billion, according to Forbes.
