Five-star TE Mitchell transfers from Allen
Ranked best in nation at position, he’ll head to Los Alamitos (Calif.)
The best sophomore tight end in the country is leaving Texas.
Davon Mitchell — the No. 1 tight end in 247Sports.com’s national Class of 2025 rankings — will transfer from Allen to Los Alamitos (Calif.), he announced on Twitter on Monday.
Mitchell, the No. 26 overall player in his class, led Allen in receiving yards (731) and touchdowns (9) as a sophomore, and was named a District 5-6A first-team honoree and a Maxpreps Sophomore Allamerican last season. He already holds 28 scholarship offers from the likes of Georgia, Alabama, Michigan and others.
“In 29 years now, I don’t know if I’ve ever coached a kid that works as hard, as consistently hard,” Allen coach Lee Wiginton said of Mitchell last season. “So many times this year you look and go, ‘He’s going to be unbelievable.’ ”
Los Alamitos finished the 2022 season No. 41 in Maxpreps’ national rankings — three spots behind No. 38 Southlake Carroll — and recently produced five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson, a USC signee and a finalist for the 2022 Gatorade National Player of the Year award.
A five-time state champion, Allen went 7-4 in 2022 and lost to Lewisville in the bi-district round of the 6A Division I playoffs.
Mitchell is the second highprofile recruit to leave Allen this offseason, as four-star junior quarterback Mike Hawkins Jr. transferred to Frisco Emerson in January after a racial epithet was spray-painted on his family’s Allen home.
It’s also the second consecutive offseason that a five-star recruit has transferred out of Allen, as five-star defensive lineman David Hicks Jr. (Texas A&M signee) left Allen for Katy Paetow during the summer.
