Neymar has surgery; his season is over

PARIS — Neymar underwent season-ending surgery on his damaged right ankle on Friday, Paris Saint-germain said.

The 31-year-old Brazil forward “was successfully operated on late this morning at the Aspetar Hospital in Doha,” the Qatari-backed club said in a statement.

Neymar is expected to be sidelined for up to four months.

Neymar was injured on Feb. 19 in a 4-3 win over Lille. He also injured his right ankle in Brazil’s opening match at last year’s World Cup in Qatar, but the forward was able to return later in the tournament.

■ Karim Benzema will miss Saturday’s Spanish league match against Espanyol because of an ankle injury, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said, adding that the French striker should be ready to play upcoming games against Liverpool and Barcelona.

■ Roma coach José Mourinho's appeal against a twomatch suspension was rejected Friday, meaning he will be forced to watch the Serie A derby against Lazio from the stands. Mourinho was banned after being sent off in Roma’s surprise loss to Cremonese at the end of last month.

■ Tottenham manager Antonio Conte described Richarlison as “selfish” for complaining about his lack of playing time.

■ Oleksandr Usyk took to social media to accept Tyson Fury's terms for a fight to become undisputed world heavyweight champion on April 29 in London.

■ Pat Mccormick, who became the first diver to sweep the 3meter and 10-meter events at consecutive Olympics (1952, 1956), has died. She was 92. She died Tuesday of natural causes at an assisted living facility in Santa Ana, Calif., her son, Tim, said Friday.

■ Stefanos Tsitsipas was beaten 7-6 (0), 4-6, 7-6 (5) by Aussie Jordan Thompson in second-round play at the BNP Paribas Open. The second-seeded Tsitsipas had his shoulder taped and the injury appeared to affect his backhand. (Results, 9C)

■ Three-time Olympic champion Kaylee Mckeown broke the world record in the 200meter backstroke at the New South Wales State Open swim championships. Mckeown finished in 2 minutes, 03.14 seconds, taking 0.21 seconds off American swimmer Regan Smith’s mark from 2019.

■ Mayo Gilbert Mcneil, 82, of Denver was charged with selling and trading fake Michael Jordan basketball cards in a scheme that prosecutors said resulted in him making more than $800,000 over four years. Mcneil was accused of making numerous fraudulent deals beginning in 2015, including the 2019 sale of a counterfeit card to a victim in Manhasset, N.Y., for $4,500, and a 2017 deal in which he traded two counterfeit cards for two authentic Tom Brady football cards.
