Pequot Golf Club

At in Stonington, you can catch the salty scent of Long Island Sound wafting over the tops of the blooming trees. Traditional New England stone walls line the scenic course and the clubhouse is a sprawling farmhouse with a cheerful yellow and white interior. The large outdoor patio and grill are a favorite among regulars, and the club space is available for intimate parties and gatherings.

First and foremost, Pequot is a great place to work on your game, members say. It’s described as a very forgiving, moderately challenging course that attracts beginners and die-hard players alike. Each hole is different from the previous one, with a handful of doglegs, water hazards and elevation changes. Pequot’s special Twilight Rate offers a great value for play after 2 p.m.

The other thing you’ll note right away is the friendly and welcoming staff. The facility has built an active and loyal community of golfers, with men, women’s and seniors associations, charitable fundraisers, and other special events. Check out the club’s newsletter and Facebook page for tips and trivia on the finer points of the game.

Rates start around $30; Twilight Rate for 18 holes is $18.
