SUN PLAY FINAL AWAY GAME TONIGHT AT MYSTICS

Down to only eight players due to injury, the Connecticut Sun have won two games out of the last three and, while proving their mettle, have played the role of the spoiler.

Take Wednesday’s 78-77 victory over the playoff-bound Atlanta Dream, for instance. Following the loss to the 9-23 Sun, Atlanta star Angel McCoughtry was less than pleased during the postgame.

“Forget the playoffs,” McCoughtry said. “What is the point of going to the playoffs if we can’t win on the road?”

And so the Sun continue to play out their season. Their final road game is tonight in Washington (7 p.m., no TV), a prelude to Sunday’s home finale against Indiana at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Even Sun coach Anne Donovan, whose overall first season with the team has been anything but, used the word “fun” after the latest win. The Sun beat the Dream with 11.5 seconds remaining on an inbounds pass from Kalana Greene to Mistie Bass.

Their three leading scorers sidelined, the Sun are being led by Renee Montgomery (10 ppg) and Tan White (9.2 ppg).

Washington, which leads the season series with the Sun 2-1, is still jockeying for playoff position, tied with Indiana for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Mystics are led by former North Carolina star Ivory Latta with 13.8 points and 4.5 assists per game.
