Ledyard’s Hedman top local at Windham

Willimanti­c — Bryce Hedman of Ledyard High School was third in the boys’ varsity 1 race at the 35th Haddad Windham Invitation­al cross country meet on Saturday, the top local finisher of the day.

Hedman, a junior, ran the 3-mile race in 16 minutes, 24 seconds, leading the Colonels to a seventh-place team finish with 228 points. Montville’s Dan Linkinhoke­r was 11th (16:53) and Ledyard’s Aaron Norcia was 21st (17:12).

James Rose of St. Bernard was eighth in the boys’ varsity 3 race in 17:12, followed by teammate Jonathan Cabral, 12th in 17:39. Stonington’s Henry Kaczman was 16th ( 17: 46), Norwich Tech’s Aaron Pelletier 24th (18:06) and Williams School’s Justin Shafner 26th ( 18: 07). Stonington tied for fifth with a team total of 172, while St. Bernard was ninth with 218.

Matthew Chisholm of Farmington ran the fastest boys’ time of the day in 16: 17. Griswold’s Alyssa Brehler turned in the best girls’ time, winning the 3-mile varsity 3 race in 18:27.

Ledyard’s Megan Brawner was 17th in the girls’ varsity 1 race (20:34), with teammates Julia Driscoll 23rd (20:56) and Jordan Houdeshell 28th (21:16) as the Colonels finished sixth with 160 points. Norwich Free Academy’s Alyssa Field was 29th (21:21).

St. Bernard freshman Ellen Arvidson was 13th in the girls’ varsity 3 race in 20:47. Willams School’s Maddie Lahm was 19th (21:11) and Waterford’s Jeanette Mooney 20th (21:18).

Boys’ soccer

Seth Lake scored the game- winning goal in the 54th minute as New London edged Ledyard 3-2 in its season opener. The game was tied 2-2 when Lake scored on an assist by Zavier Veliz ( goal, two assists). Josh Vincent had eight saves for the Whalers, Kingderly Thony scored, and Wessam Hoda had an assist. Kevin McCarthy and Walter Factor scored for Ledyard (1-1).

Chris Tsang scored both goals within two minutes of each other to lift Stonington past Wheeler 2-0. Steven Zelepos made two saves in the shutout for the Bears (2-0). Andrew Swift finished with four saves for Wheeler (0-2).

Girls’ soccer

Alyssa Samson had two goals and Kelly Lamb and Carly Loy each had a goal and an assist to pace Ledyard past New London 5-0. Haley Wilt scored for Ledyard (2-0) and Savannah Johnson had an assist. New Lodnon is 0-1.

Girls’ volleyball

McKenzie Maneggia had 45 assists as RHAM beat NFA 25-12, 25-13, 25-17. Sarah Veilluex had 19 kills forRHAM(2-0). Melissa Castillo had 12 digs for NFA (2-1).
