POLITICAL BRIEFS

- — Tess Townsend — Kimberly Drelich

reason for running is that she wishes to improve the business environment and education in the state while reducing taxes.

“I think the state sometimes gives us excessive mandates in the educational arena,” she gave as an example of something she would like to change, should she be elected to represent the district that includes Waterford and Montville.

McCarty said she has served on the Board of Education for 17 years. She is also president of the Connecticut Conference of Republican Women and is on the Thames Valley Council for Community Action board of trustees. She previously served as TVCCA’s chairperson.

McCarty is a retired teacher and also briefly worked as a pilot with the Civil Air Patrol. She is now in the process of taking over sole proprietorship of her family’s business, Brookfield Lanes Bowling Center.

The Waterford Democratic Town Committee previously nominated retired former town official Walter Barry to run for the seat, but Barry withdrew his candidacy earlier this month. The Democratic 38th District Convention is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Quaker Hill Elementary School in Waterford.

Incumbent state Rep. Betsy Ritter, D-Waterford, is vying to run for the 20th state Senate District. The other contestant for the endorsement is New London Democratic Town Committee Chairman Bill Satti, who works in public relations at Foxwoods Resort Casino. The Democratic candidate will be chosen Monday at the Democratic nominating convention for the 20th Senate District. convention in Westbrook on Wednesday.

The 23rd District covers Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook.

The Westbrook, Old Saybrook and Lyme delegations nominated Carney while the Old Lyme delegation nominated Vicki Lanier of Old Lyme.

Lanier, a lawyer and former treasurer on the Lyme-Old Lyme Board of Education, announced on Wednesday her intention to primary in August.

Carney, a real estate broker and the grandson of actor Art Carney, said he hopes to lower taxes, reduce spending and help businesses to improve the quality of life for seniors and younger generations.

“I want to go to Hartford to change the course we are on and improve society for the future,” he said in a phone interview.

State Rep. Marilyn Giuliano, R-Old Saybrook, who currently holds the 23rd District seat but will retire after this term, gave the nominating speech.

“I believe Devin will work for all of us with energy and integrity, and with an interest not in politics, but public service,” she said in a phone interview in which she reiterated her remarks.

In a press release, Lanier offered her congratulations to Carney and reflected on an anecdote about how 12 years ago, “a strong candidate named Marilyn Giuliano, who lost the convention, felt compelled to let the full membership of the Republican Party make a choice about who would be the best qualified to not only defeat the Democratic opponent, but most importantly, effectively serve the people of the 23rd district.”

“I am confident that the voters in the Republican Party will choose a candidate equally equipped with the life experience, professional skill set, energy, and proven track record to be our next representative,” she said.
