Voluntown — James Daniel Sharp, 50, of Voluntown, formerly of Groton, passed away on Monday, June 9, 2014, at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.

Jim was born on Aug. 7, 1963, in New London, the son of Shirley (Marsh) Sharp of Stonington, formerly of Groton, and the late Robert M. Sharp. He was also the grandson of the late Clarence and Mildred (McMullen) Sharp.

Mr. Sharp was a former mayor of the City of Groton and the founder of the Whaling City Dredge & Dock Co., in Groton. Jim graduated from Fitch High School and went to work with his father at the family-owned Marine Constructi­on Co., in Groton.

Besides his mother, Jim is survived by his four children, his faithful and loving daughters, Jacquelyn Danielle Sharp of Boston, Samantha Rae Sharp, sons, Jacob Bryan Sharp, and Johnathan James Sharp, all of Preston. He is also survived by his three sisters, Margaret and Lindsay Marcom and their children, Jason Marcom and Keith and Allison (Marcom) Baker, all of California, Cynthia Puhlick of Lisbon and her children, Joshua and Corrie Puhlick of Maine, Justin and Kristy Puhlick of Massachuse­tts, Peter and Stacie (Parillo) Reinhard of Rhode Island, and David Reinhard of Connecticu­t, Pamela and Honorable Steven Spellman of Noank and their children, Robert Keane Spellman, also of Noank and Kelly Rae Spellman of Cork, Ireland.

Jim had also been predecease­d by his brother-in-law, Paul Puhlick.

Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., is assisting with private graveside services to be held in the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice, or to SCADD, Inc., 37 Camp Moween Road, Lebanon, CT, 06249.

Jim’s family requests that in his memory, please remember to take it “one day at a time.”
