Waterford 9-10s win District 3 title over Madison

Waterford 10-11s capture Division 3 title, move on to the next step of the postseason

East Lyme — Logan Avin pitched a complete- game shutout for the victory as Waterford Little League (ages 10-11) claimed the Connecticu­t Division 3 championsh­ip Tuesday over Madison, 8-0, avenging a loss to Madison earlier in the tournament.

Waterford, which previously won the District 10 title, will next play for the Section 2 title at 5:30 p. m. Thursday in Tolland. The Section 2 winner goes on to the best- of- three state championsh­ip series July 2628 in Terryville.

Gavin Hernandez had four hits, including a tworun home run, for Waterford, Jordan Elci had three hits including a tworun home run, and Will Sutman added a solo homer.

Tigers top Muckdogs

• Steven Fuentes tripled home two runs in the fourth inning and the Connecticu­t Tigers made it stand up for a 2-1 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs. It was the second straight win for the Tigers (14-16). Chase Edwards (3-3) picked up the win in relief, pitching five innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. He retired the first 10 men he faced. Gerson Moreno pitched a perfect ninth for his second save. Batavia is 9-21.

• Saxon Herbert pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts as Three Rivers edged the Panera Pirates 2-0. Austin Gillespie scored twice for Three Rivers (6-10) and Kyle Willoughby added an RBI single. Tyler Mikula struck out five and Sawyer Gregory singled for the Pirates (11-2).

Sutera Tournament (9-10)

• Randy Vidal and Derrel Mitchell had two RBI each as New London defeated Groton 14-9. Zion Fraser pitched three innings in relief for the win. Rory Pelletier had two hits for Groton.
