TROOPER CLOCKS MOTORCYCLI­ST DRIVING 118 MPH OVER BRIDGE

New London— APawcatuck man was charged with reckless driving this morning after a state trooper said he clocked him driving a motorcycle at 118 miles per hour as he crossed the Gold Star Memorial Bridge from Groton to New London.

Travis R. Stokes, 30, of 41 Liberty St. was released on a $500 bond and is due in New London Superior Court on Aug. 6.

According to a news release, a trooper conducting a routine traffic patrol had completed a motor vehicle stop at 6:23 a.m. when he noticed a motorcycli­st passing by at a high speed.

The trooper said he clocked the motorcycli­st going 118 mph in an area where the posted speed limit is 55 mph.

The trooper pulled over Stokes at the bottom of the Exit 82 ramp and took him into custody without incident. coming down the off ramp from Interstate 95 at Exit 92, according to police.

The car, carrying a family, had come down the ramp at Exit 92 of I-95 north and collided with the dump truck that was traveling south on Route 2.

Two adults and two children were taken toWesterly Hospital for treatment of minor injuries following the 11:42 a.m. crash, according to Stonington Police Sgt. Louis Diamanti.

The dump truck driver admitted apologetic­ally that he had inadverten­tly driven through the red light and received a ticket for failure to obey a control signal, according to Diamanti.

Traffic was rerouted from the area while police and fire officials worked the scene.
