Stonington boys edge Fitch on Tsang’s goal 1-0

Stonington — Chris Tsang's first-half goal was all the Stonington boys' soccer team needed in a 1-0 win over Fitch on opening day of the high school season Friday.

Shane Smith recorded the assist, and Joey Rosa had two saves in the shutout. Greg Cooper countered with four saves for the Falcons. In other games: • Preston Minor scored both goals in Norwich Tech's 2-0 nonleague win over Wheeler. Cameron Mendez-Neff and Josh Ries contribute­d assists, and Ian Hubbard stopped four shots in the shutout. Alex Haines had six saves for the Lions.

• BahaaHodas­cored three goals, Wadlet Jean-Baptiste added two goals and three assists, and Leonardo Oviedo contribute­d two goals and an assist to help host New London beat Grasso Tech, 11-1. Vladimir Pamphile scored for the Eagles.

• Old Lyme could not find the back of the net despite outshootin­g Bacon Academy, 10-7, in a scoreless tie. Cam Dean-Frazier had six saves for theWildcat­s.

Girls

• Mia Santana had four goals and two assists to lead New London past Wheeler, 7-2. Rosalee Nicholson added two goals for the Whalers and Katie Hanrahan one, while Emma Stock and Emma Morgan each scored for Wheeler.

• Freshman Dinorah Cruz scored the lone goal for Grasso Tech in a 4-1 loss to Med-Ed Prep in New Britain. Taylor Cooley stopped 15 shots for the Eagles.

• Natalie Dione had a goal and assist as Norwich Free Academy scored three sec- ond-half goals to beat St. Bernard, 4-1, in Norwich. Juliette Hogan, Mia Caporaso and Mae Phipps also scored in the victory, and Kayla Tosses collected nine saves. Mia Londregan scored in the first half for the Saints.

• Allie Smith and Zanaya Sligh each scored two goals to lift Norwich Tech/ Holy Family to a 5-2 win over Two Rivers in Hartford. Emily Kivela also scored, and Lauren Veile had four saves as the Warriors scored three times in the second half to break a 2-2 halftime tie.

• Old Lyme allowed the tying goal late in the second half and settled for a 1-1 draw with Bacon Academy.

• Hannah Johnson and Sarah Thomas scored second-half goals to lead host Stonington to a 2-0 win over Fitch. Tati LaFrance-Boyce recorded two saves for the Bears. CassieWood­s stopped 10 shots for the Falcons.
