Groton — A car crashed through the living room of a house on Shennecossett Road Thursday, shaking the house on its foundation, according to city police.

Two men were also injured in a separate accident Wednesday night in which a furniture delivery truck struck a telephone pole and knocked out power to part of the city.

The owner of the house at 881 Shennecossett Road was not home at the time of the accident at 10:20 a. m. Thursday, City Police Chief Thomas Davoren said.

“The owner was at work, and it took out his living room and dining room,” Davoren said.

The driver, a woman in her 60s, suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Pequot Health Center, said Capt. Mark Cassidy, of the Groton City Fire Department.

A small dog in the car during the accident was unhurt, he said.

“The car was almost completely inside of the building,” Cassidy said.

The car, a Kia Sedona, passed a telephone pole at the intersection of Tyler Avenue and traveled uphill

before hitting the house about 100 feet away.

The building official inspected the house and deemed it an unsafe structure, Davoren said.

“It shifted the house off its foundation,” Davoren said.

Police also responded to an accident at 9: 09 p. m. Wednesday when a Pilgrim furniture delivery truck struck a telephone pole at the intersection of Mitchell Street and Park Avenue, said Acting Capt. Raymond Hart, of Groton City Fire Department.

“Completely severed the telephone pole from the ground. The pole was laying on top of the truck,” he said.

The driver was able to walk and was taken to Pequot Health Center. The passenger was pinned in the car and had to be extricated as the front end had crushed in. He was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Hart said.

Groton Utilities was called to the scene because power lines fell on the vehicle and on the ground.

“They secured the power for us and spent the next 12 hours repairing the pole, replacing wires and getting the street open again,” Hart said.

Both accidents are under investigation. d.straszheim@theday.com Twitter: @DStraszheim
