Bears advance to ECC boys’ quarters with PK win over NFA

Norwich — Stonington survived a second-half comeback by Norwich Free Academy before defeating the sixth-seededWild­cats 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout to win their Eastern Connecticu­t Conference boys’ soccer tournament first round game on Thursday night at Fontaine Field.

The No. 11 Bears allowed NFA to score three straight goals in the second half to wipe out a 3-0 halftime lead and send the game to sudden death, where neither team scored through two overtime periods.

During penalty kicks, Cam Whalen, Jamison Magowan and Jason Kilcoyne connected to send Stonington (8-8-1) into Friday’s quarterfin­als at No. 3 Lyman Memorial at 6:30 p.m.

Will Bartinik scored two goals and Jack Cullen one in the first half for the Bears (Magowan, Whalen and Chris Tang had assists) before theWildcat­s (9-6-1) stormed back to tie the game on goals by Nate Cherenzia, Bryce Capunitan and Matt Sylvestre, Sylvestre’s goal trying the game with 23 minutes remaining in regulation.

Camden Edmond scored the lone NFA penalty kick. In another boys’ soccer game: • Norwich Tech ended its regular season with a 1-0 victory over Cheney Tech in the Constituti­on State Conference.

Kevin Porras, assisted by Qameron Mendez-Neff, scored in the 54th minute for theWarrior­s (9-5-2), who begin play in the CSC tournament with a quarterfin­al game on Monday against an opponent and site to be determined. Goalie Ian Hubbert earned the shutout with three saves.

Girls’ soccer

• Old Lyme finished its regular season with a 5-0 victory over North Branford in the Shoreline Conference. Jenna Peduzzi had one goal and one assist for the Wildcats (12-2-2), who are the No. 1 seed for next week’s conference tournament, while Britney DeRoehn, Cici Klimazewsk­i, Mary Bolles and Maddie Ouellette each scored once and Keelin Hurtt and Mya Johnson added assists. Goalie Tori Sims stopped three shots to earn the shutout.

• Mia Santana scored four goals as New London finished its regular season with a 7-0 nonleague win over Norwich Tech/Holy Family. Madison Keefe, Olivia Santana and Tiffeny McPherson each added a goal for the Whalers (6-7-3) while Spencer Roman added an assist.

H.S. volleyball

• Norwich Tech finished its regular season with a 25-8, 25-13 and 25-12 nonleague loss to Killingly. TheWarrior­s (10-8), who beat New London 25-16, 25-15 and 25-21 on Wednesday, will host a quarterfin­al game in the Constituti­on State Conference on Monday against an opponent to be determined. In the win over New London, Saige Laquitara had 10 service points, three aces and five kills while Vanessa Gumbs had 12 digs and six assists and Chloe Guzman had 10 assists.

• Ledyard ended its season with a 27-25, 25-19 and 25-9 loss to Griswold. Chloe Hespeler had seven kills and Jenna Boyd six for the Colonels, who finish 5-15. Ledyard defeated Wheeler 10-25, 25-19, 16-25, 27-25 and 15-7 on Wednesday as Boyd had six aces and 10 kills, Hespeler 10 kills and Sela Gill 11 assists.

• NFA ended its regular season with a 25-18, 25-19 and 25-13 nonleague loss to Glastonbur­y. Cebria Outlow had 11 kills for the Wildcats (8-10) while Isis Deloatch had four blocks and MacKenzie Burke 12 digs.

Women’s soccer

• Coast Guard Academy scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Mitchell College 2-0 in a non-conference game. Sarah Hills, assisted by Gabby Auzenburgs, scored her sixth goal of the season to give the Bears (7-10) at 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute and Terry Netusil added an insurance goal, her fifth of the year, less than four minutes later. Goalie Katie McBride made 14 saves for the Mariners (3-8- 4) while Coast Guard goalie Rachel Boohar finished with four saves to earn the shutout.

H.S. field hockey

• Cara Bradley had four goals and three assists as East Lyme cruised to an 8-0 nonleague victory over Branford. Bradley, who set the Vikings’ single- season goals record earlier in the week, now has 28 for the season. Kaihley Rafferty added a pair of goals for East Lyme (13-2-1) while Anna Fennell and Alexis Burgess each scored once and Hannah LeBeau and Ashley Toback had assists.

• Gaby Masso- Isern scored two goals as Fitch/Ledyard won its first game in its final game with a 3-0 victory over Windham in the ECC. Ashley McFadden also scored for the Falcons (1-13-1, 1-12-1).

College field hockey

• Connecticu­t College midfielder Heidi Halsted has been selected to play in the Victory Sports Tours/ National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n Division III Senior Game on Saturday, Nov. 21, atWashingt­on Lee University in Lexington, Va.

Halsted scored five goals and added two assists for the Camels this fall, second on the team. She is also a member of the women’s lacrosse team in the spring.
