LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The Citizens of East Lyme should consider a change in leadership. Steve Carpenteri is the logical choice. Don’t be fooled by the debate. East Lyme needs a leader, not an actor.
If you look at his record as a businessman, employer, and a family man, a better choice could not be made. I have known Steve for over 40 years. He is honest and truly a gentleman. I trust him to lead our town into financial freedom. I trust that he will free us from the suffocation of high taxes. He will put the leadership back in the hands of the appointed boards and commissions.
As a retired senior -- who at this stage in my life has to make personal decisions as do many of my friends -do we remain in East Lyme and suffer the high tax burden or do we vote in a leader who is not a tax-and-spend leader with a warm smile? Joseph J. Mingo East Lyme
Martha Marx is one of the most capable and determined people I know. In 2014, I worked with Martha to organize the union for the home health aides of southeastern Connecticut VNA. Without her help, our efforts would not have been successful. Martha is very detail-oriented, focused, and strong. She stands up for what is fair and looks out for the underdog.
I traveled to Washington, D.C., with her to testify before the National Labor Relations Board. Martha encouraged me and supported me throughout the process. I was very thankful to have Martha there advocating with me. Martha has a way of empowering people and getting them involved. I know that when she is elected, she will be responsive to and supportive of the residents of New London. New London will benefit tremendously by having her as a city councilor. Donna M. Waterford voters; check out our history, then vote! Ten years ago, Millstone’s tax contribution was lowered significantly leaving Waterford in a real bind. Dan Steward took office as first selectman and brought in his team. In the next 10 years, Route 85 exploded with commercial buildings. Charter Oak Bank established headquarters here and revenues increased annually.
Steward’s steady hand made room for the largest increase in school construction in Waterford’s history. He established and maintains a 12 percent reserve fund, and a triple “A” Bond Rating.
Waterford’s recognized for its sound management, its fiscally responsible guidance, its excellent school system, its reasonable property taxes and its business friendly attitude. Steward and the Republican Town Committee are running a team of bright young professionals. It would seem to be in Waterford’s voters’ interest to continue this successful record by voting Republican.
