Conn men advance to NESCAC soccer semis

New London — Graham Koval tied the game at 3-3 with six seconds left in regulation and fourth-seeded Conn College went on to beat No. 5 Williams on penalty kicks (4-2) in the quarterfin­als of the New England Small College Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament Saturday.

The Camels (10-4-2) move on to the NESCAC semifinals for the second straight season against No. 6 Bowdoin next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Middlebury College. Bowdoin upset No. 3 Tufts 1-0.

Matthew Bitchell and Chris Lockwood each had a goal and an assist for the Camels and Austin Dacunha had three saves.

Mohammed Rashid had a goal and an assist for the Ephs (7-6-3), which scored three successive goals to take a 3-2 lead in the 75th minute. In other games: • Luke Alvaro and A.J. Vico both scored for Springfiel­d in its 2-0 win over Coast Guard Academy in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Billy Schmid had two saves for Coast Guard (5-12-1, 2-4-1).

• Marcos Vieira Filho scored in the 98th minute as Daniel Webster edged Mitchell College 1-0 in overtime in the New England Collegiate Conference. Anthony Drake had 21 saves for the Mariners (7-9-1, 4-4).

Women's soccer

• Alexandra Mahar scored twice as Mitchell beat Daniel Webster, 2-0, in the NECC. Katie McBride had two saves for the Mariners (4-8-4, 3-4-2), who clinched a berth in the conference tournament.

• Allie Hrabchak had three goals for MIT during a 4-0 win over Coast Guard in the NEWMAC. Rachel Boohar had 11 saves for the Bears (7-11, 2-8).

Volleyball

• Katia Elisman had 55 assists and 17 digs as Conn College bested Hamilton 24-26, 25-13, 25-17, 27-25 in the NESCAC. Sam Hunter had 22 kills, Ella Johnson had 16 kills and Cailyn Straubel had 21 digs for Conn (17-6, 6-4).

• Alli Davanzo had 11 kills and Megan Gebhard 10 kills as MIT swept Coast Guard 25-15, 25-16, 25-14 in the NEWMAC. Maggie Hine had 23 assists and 13 digs for the Bears (199, 5-5) and Susan West had 10 kills and 10 digs. Also, Michelle McGill had nine digs.

Football

• Cheshire Academy broke open a close game with 28 second-half points to beat host St. Thomas More 35-7. Robert Madison, who passed for 296 yards, thew a 30-yard touchdown pass to Juwon Grant for the Chancellor­s' lone score in the third quarter.

Men's cross country

• Stony Brook's Bryce Hedman of Ledyard won America East Rookie of the Meet honors at Saturday's championsh­ip. Hedman finished 12th overall (25:39.11).

• Conn College's Niall Williams posted a time of 26:09 to finish in 31st place at NESCAC Championsh­ip at Wesleyan. The Camels placed 10th with 256 points. Also for the Camels, Price Day placed 52nd (26:37), Kyle Hawk finished in 55th (26:38), Zander Mintz was 62nd place (26:46) and Ben Bosworth was 72nd (26:57).

Women's cross country

• Ashley Curran finished 11th to earn all-conference honors and lead Conn College to a sixth-place finish at the NESCAC Championsh­ip meet at Wesleyan. Curran finished in 22:16 for the Camels, who had 177 points. Also for Conn, Alex Fromme was 16th (22:33), Emily Winter was 39th (23:16), Sabina Flandrick was 61st (23:57) and Nicole Adam was 78th (24:24).

Men's swimming

• Coast Guard won 10 events en route to a season-opening 186-108 win over Springfiel­d. Freshmen accounted for six individual wins for the Bears as Taylor Rowe won the 500 freestyle (4:59.20) and 1,000 freestyle (10:14.77), Dan Moreno won the 200 freestyle (1:47.89) and the 200 IM (1:59.56) and Will French won both the 1-meter diving (236.10) and the 3-meter diving (239.70). Also for the Bears, Ross Garrett won the 100 butterfly (53.95) and 200 butterfly (2:01.27) and Brandon Ledford won the 50 freestyle (22.62). Coast Guard's 400 freestyle relay team of Tim Dion, Garrett, Ben Morseth and Elliot Vanderen won in 3:18.83.

Women's swimming

• Coast Guard freshmen Kristen Young and Christine McCulla each won an individual event while classmate Samantha Kenis placed second in their collegiate debuts as the Bears were beaten by host Springfiel­d 206-93 and Rhode Island 209.4-89.5. Young won the 200 freestyle (1:58.54) while McCulla won the 500 freestyle (5:20.39) and Kenis was second in the 200 backstroke (2:15.99).

Field hockey

• Charlotte Veitner had four goals and an assist as second-ranked UConn blitzed Georgetown 8-0 in the Big East. Casey Umstead had two goals for the Huskies (18-0, 5-0).
