Hurley leads Waterford girls into ECC semis

Waterford — Claire Hurley scored four goals to as second-seeded Waterford rolled to a 4-1 victory over No. 10 Plainfield in the quarterfin­als of the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference girls' soccer tournament Saturday morning.

The Lancers (13-2-2) advance to play No. 3 Ledyard at 4:30 p.m. in Monday's semifinals at Stonington. Top-seeded East Lyme plays No. 4 Stonington in the second game at 7.

Mia Brennan, Megan Sturm and Lauren Goldstein each had an assist for Waterford and Jordan Kovacs added four saves. Alexis Price scored and Shannon Sweeney had the assist for the Panthers. In other games: • Abby Xenelis had three goals and two assists and Camryn Werbinski added three goals and an assist as Williams School downed Hyde of Woodstock, 8-2. Lucy Burr had three assists and Bell Griscom scored for the Blues (8-3-1). Also,

Mia Taylor had an assist.

Volleyball

• Seventh-seeded Norwich Free Academy advanced to the quarterfin­als of the ECC tournament with a 25-13, 24-12, 25-16 victory over No. 10 Montville. The Wildcats (9-10) will play at No. 2 Lyman Memorial on Monday at 6 p.m. MacKenzie Burke had eight kills and eight digs for NFA while Isis Deloatch added four blocks and six kills. Montville is 9-11.

Football

• Cody Calash ran 16 times for 177 yards and three touchdowns as Montville trounced Woodstock Academy, 47-18, in the ECC Small. Samuel Kury had 10 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown for Montville (4-2, 1-1) and Andrew Petherick scored on a 74-yard kickoff return, Also, Eric Anthony and Alex Quidgeon both scored on 1-yard runs.

Girls' cross country

• Williams placed second at the Connecticu­t Independen­t School Athletic Conference Championsh­ip at Bucks Hill Park in Waterbury with 69 points, led by individual champion Mary Madaus, who finished in 20:55.

Also for Blues, Hattie Grant finished 14th (23:34), Grace Cassineri 15th (23:46), Grace Burleson 19th (25:09) and Sarah Billis 20th (25:34).

Boys' cross country

• Will Jarrett won individual honors in 18:04 as Williams placed fifth with 88 points at the CISAC Championsh­ip meet in Waterbury. Also for the Blues, Colin Madaus finished 10th (19:22), Hartmut Doerwaldt 21st (20:34.51), Colin Kronholm 22nd (20:34.84) and David McCarthy 34th (22:08).

Swimming

• Emma Magna won the 100 backstroke (1:03.30) and teamed with Anneliese Lapides, Kate Orefice and Gretchen Stelter to win the 200 medley relay (1:56.45) at the Viking Invitation­al.
