Montville — Anna Margaret “Peggy” Plourde, 85, of Oakdale, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Jan. 23, 2016, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

Peggy was born in Northfield, Vt., on Jan. 20, 1931, the daughter of Merton E. Ashton and Anna (Donahue) Ashton. She graduated from Northfield High School and went on to graduate from Jeanne Mance School of Nursing at Bishop Degosbrian­d Hospital.

She married Leo “Pete” Plourde in 1952. She had been employed as a registered nurse at Bishop Degosbrian­d Hospital in Burlington, Vt., Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington, Vt., St. Bernard and Montville high schools, and retired from Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

Peggy was a past member of the Stella Maris Chapter of the Norwich Diocesan Council of Catholic Nurses. She was a past member of Our Lady of the Lakes Church choir. She was also an associate member of Joseph Lawrence School of Nursing Alumni Associatio­n.

Her favorite pastimes were watching football and basketball games; her favorite team was the UConn women’s basketball team. She traveled all over the U.S. and Canada to watch her husband compete with his black Labradors in AKC and CKC sanctioned field trials. She also followed her three granddaugh­ters’ snowboardi­ng competitio­ns over the years, including Jamie Anderson. She was one of Jamie’s biggest fans and was so proud of her winning the first ever Olympic gold medal in the Women’s Slopestyle Event in the 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi, Russia.

Peggy is survived by Pete, her husband of 63 years; daughters Ann Plourde Jennings and her husband, David, of Northfield, Vt., Lauren Anderson of Hartland, Vt.; and a son, Peter Plourde and his wife, Lynn, of Uncasville; 17 grandchild­ren; and a great-grandchild.

She was predecease­d by her parents and brother, Merton Ashton.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Our Lady of the Lakes Church in Oakdale.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributi­ons may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
