NFA’s Marquis Ward (high jump), Kelsie Hall (pole vault) win Class LL indoor track titles
New Haven — Norwich Free Academy's Marquis Ward won the boys' high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches, and Kelsie Hall finished first in the girls' pole vault at 10-6 at Thursday's Class LL state indoor track and field championship at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Also for the Wildcats, Connor Gralton was fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:37.14) and fifth in the 1,600 (4:27.78), while Marcus Gates was fourth in the high jump (6-0) and Christopher Weir fourth in the pole vault (11-0).
Ward added a sixth-place finish in the long jump (19-11.75) for the NFA boys, who were eighth in the team standings with 25 points.
Allyson Lewis was third in the high jump (4-10) for the NFA girls, who were 10th with 18 points. Allyson Briggs was fifth in the pole vault (86).
Danbury won both team titles.
Women's basketball
• UConn's Kia Nurse was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team. Nurse, a sophomore guard, has a 3.43 GPA as an exploratory major and, as one of eight selections, is now eligible for the Academic All-America team. Nurse is averaging 9.5 points and 3.0 assists for the top-ranked Huskies, scoring a season-high 20 points last Saturday, including four 3-pointers, in a win over East Carolina.
H.S. hockey
• Andrew Bannon scored three goals as NFA/St. Bernard/Stonington/Bacon/Lyman beat the Eastern Connecticut Eagles 8-1 Wednesday. Maren Lancaster scored twice and Mitchell McCullough and Hunter Desaulnier had a goal each for the Redhawks (6-7). Kevin Close scored for the Eagles (4-13).
H.S. gymnastics
• Woodstock Academy won its seventh straight ECC Championship on Wednesday night. The Centaurs scored 145.45. NFA was second with 128.60, East Lyme/Waterford/Montville was third with 127.95 and Stonington finished fourth with 123.55.
Woodstock's Erin Logan was the all-around winner with 37.95 and won the bars (9.85) and floor exercise (9.6) while teammate Paige Stuyniski was second in all-around (36.85) and won the vault (9.6) and balance beam (9.75).
NFA's Taylor Churchill was second in the bars (9.3) and third on balance beam (8.8). East Lyme/Waterford/ Montville teammates Maranda Ealahan (beam, 8.4) and Morgan Staehle (floor, 8.75) had fifth-place finishes.
H.S. swimming
• Jordan Legg won a pair of events as the Williams School boys' team lost to Wheeler School/Providence Country Day on Wednesday, 60-28. Legg won the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Williams lost to Wheeler/PCD, 72-19. Alessandra D'Arcy won the 500 freestyle.
