New London girls rout Berlin in Class L tourney opener

No. 29 East Lyme girls upset No. 4 Nonnewaug

New London — Charee Osbourne had 19 points and 23 rebounds as second-seeded New London defeated No. 31 Berlin, 59-32, in the first round of the CIAC Class L girls' basketball tournament on Monday night.

Jada Lucas scored 23 points and India Pagan added 11 rebounds and four blocks for New London (22-1), which will play host to No. 18 Guilford, a 5135 winner over No. 15 Barlow, in Friday's second round at 7 p.m.

Nina D'Amato scored 13 for the Redcoats (8-13). In other games: • Jordan Venditto had eight points and 12 steals and Gabby Murphy scored 12 as No. 29 East Lyme stunned No. 4 Nonnewaug, 42-27, in the Class L first round.

Maggie Powers scored 10 and Megan Bauman added six points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Vikings (10-13), who will play at No. 13 Northwest Catholic on Friday at 7 p.m. Northwest, last season's Class L runner-up, beat No. 20 Bristol Eastern, 87-63.

• Caitlyn Dittman had 18 points and 15 rebounds to pace No. 22 St. Bernard past No. 11 Wamogo, 36-32, in the Class S first round. The Saints (1012) will play at No. 6 Goodwin Tech on Friday (7 p.m.) in New Britain. Goodwin beat No. 27 Med-Ed Prep, 49-19.

SCHOOLS

• Sloane Sweitzer 21 points, 17 rebounds and three steals as No. 25 Old Lyme beat No. 8 Metro Learning Cen- ter, 44-39, in the Class S first round. Lauren Quaratella scored nine for the Wildcats (10-12), who will play at No. 9 Hartford Classical on Friday (7 p.m.). Classical beat No. 24 Gilbert in overtime, 69-66.

Boys' basketball

• Dan Porcic had 34 points as Putnam defeated Wheeler 75- 68. Alex Haines had 31 points and 18 rebounds for Wheeler, which finishes 5-15, while Ryan Dussault added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Boys' swimming

• Yovanny Santos won the 100-meter freestyle (1:04.79) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay and freestyle relay teams as Norwich Free Academy beat Waterford, 9766, in the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference. Brady Friese won the 100 backstroke (1:20.26) and teamed with Kevin Sikorski, Cristian Calderon and Santos to win the 200 medley relay (2:19.06) for the Wildcats (5-6, 4-6). Also, Michael Neville won the 200 freestyle (2:49.12), Timothy Yuen won the 200 individual medley (2:49.91), and combined with Peter He and Santos to win the 200 freestyle relay (2:06.52). Kevin Su won the 50 freestyle (28.46) and 100 breaststro­ke (1:19.96) for the Lancers (3-8, 2-8), and Matt Patton won diving (200.70).

Indoor track

• NFA's Connor Gralton and East Lyme's Vann Moffett each had seventh-place finishes during Sunday's New England Championsh­ips at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Gralton placed seventh in the 1,000-meter run in 2:32.84 while Moffett placed seventh in the mile run in 4:23.81. In addition, East Lyme's Mikaela Lopriore finished 12th in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 11 inches.
