- — Day staff reports

Shawn Evans made National Lacrosse League history as the New England Black Wolves defeated the Toronto Rock 14-10 Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre and moved a step closer to securing a playoff berth.

On his assist of Pat Saunders' goal 1 minutes, 36 seconds into the fourth quarter, Evans picked up his fifth point of the night and his 100th point of the season. That makes the Black Wolves forward the first player in NLL history to score 100 or more points in four consecutive seasons. He finished the game with two goals and five assists and now has 102 points.

The Black Wolves, 9-5 and coming off an overtime win over defending league champion Saskatchewan on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena, will qualify for the playoffs with a Georgia loss Sunday against Colorado.

Evan Kirk had 50 saves in goal for New England, which was 5-for-7 on the power play one night after going 5-for-5 with the man advantage in the win over Saskatchewan. Saunders and Kevin Crowley each recorded a hat trick for the Wolves. Toronto is 4-10.

New England took an 8-4 lead with 40 seconds left in the first half on a power play goal by Jordan Hall.

After two Black Wolves penalties put New England down two men, Toronto scored to cut the lead to three at 8-5 with 11:19 left in the third. As the second penalty expired, however, Ryan Hotaling picked up a transition goal for the Black Wolves to increase the lead back to four. Saunders picked up his second goal of the night on the power play with 6:03 left to give the Black Wolves a 10-5 advantage.

The Black Wolves will next be in action Friday at Georgia. It was the second sweep of back-toback games for the Wolves this season.
