Duncan sparks Bears to doublehead­er sweep

Springfiel­d, Mass. — Coast Guard swept past Springfiel­d, rallying to win both games of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference baseball doublehead­er Saturday.

Timbo Duncan had the go-ahead hit in both games, as the Bears won the opener 13-10 and the second game 7-4. Coast Guard scored six runs in the eighth inning of the opener to erase a 10-6 deficit, with Duncan's two-run single capping the rally. Will Stephens and Zach Serna had three hits each in the opener for Coast Guard (10-13, 3-3). Duncan's two-run double in the seventh inning of the second game gave Coast Guard, which had trailed 4-0, a 5-4 lead. Serna had three hits in the nightcap. In other games: • UConn Avery Point split a doublehead­er with Dean College, losing the first game 3-2 and winning the second, 4-2, in Region 21 action.

C.J. Caprio had two hits and Nick Goglia (3-2) pitched well in the defeat in game one. Dean scored the game-winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh.

Mike Morgan of East Lyme chipped in three hits while Tom Caravetta had two hits and Vincent Pallisco had two hits and an RBI in game two for the Pointers (8-12, 1-1). Josh Vincent (31) of New London picked up the win, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out four in six innings.

Softball

• Hayden Short had two hits, including a double, with three RBI as Coast Guard beat Babson, 4-3, in the first game of its NEWMAC doublehead­er. Emma Hvozdovich had two hits, including a double, and scored twice in the first game for Coast Guard (8-18, 1-7) and Emily Hogan singled, scored twice and stole a base. Samantha Smith had two hits, including a double, with three runs and an RBI as Babson won the second game, 9-6. The Beavers are 12-9, 3-4. Sara Cammuso had a single, two runs and an RBI in the second game for Coast Guard, and Malia Hindle had an RBI double and scored.

• Allie Petillo's RBI single scored Alyssa McKinnon as Regis beat Mitchell in eight innings, 2-1, in the second game of its New England Collegiate Conference doublehead­er sweep. Petillo had three hits for the Pride (7-5, 3-1). Shannon O'Neil doubled and Danielle Autieri had an RBI in the nightcap for the Mariners (2-16, 1-3).

Men's lacrosse

• Peter Mumford had nine of his 16 saves in the second half as Bowdoin won its ninth straight game, 9-5, over Conn College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Shawn Daly had a goal and four assists for Bowdoin (9-1, 6-1). Tucker Mscisz had two goals for the Camels (6-5, 2-4) and Derek Bertolini and Ross Thompson both had a goal and an assist.
