Dayton Trehern

North Stonington — Dayton T. Trehern, 71, of North Stonington, husband of 33 years to Susan (Ormsby) Trehern, died Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

Born in New London, he was the son of the late Elmer and Eleanor (Strickland) Trehern and lived in North Stonington for most of his life. He attended local schools in Groton and was a graduate of Fitch High School, Class of 1963.

Following his education, Dayton enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1969. After serving his country, he began his career at Pratt & Whitney and a long career with General Dynamics, where he was still actively working. During his long tenure at General Dynamics, Dayton owned and operated T&T Welding and was also employed with Thavenet’s Machine Co. for 20 years.

Dayton served the Town of North Stonington as first selectman from 1979-83. He was a scout master with the Boy Scouts of America and a member and master 7th degree with the North Stonington Grange, a Connecticut justice of the peace and a certified farrier for the American Farriers Association. He also enjoyed camping, hiking, fly-fishing, horses, had a love of gardening, carpentry and especially spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two children, Paul Trehern and his wife, Kathleen, of Waterford and Tamara Trehern of Mystic; brother, James Holmgren and his wife, Carole, of California; sister, Dorothy Dussault of Groton; three grandchildren, Courtney, Amanda and Haley Trehern; and two great-grandchildren, Kaylee Gardner and Olivia Rios.

He was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn Muetzel.

His family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A service will follow at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic.
