- — Karen Florin

A New Haven grand jury on Tuesday indicted a New London man on drug and firearm charges after investigators found a large quantity of drugs in his apartment, a U.S. Department of Justice news release said.

Ellsworth Robertson, 35, also known as “S,” of Hartford and New London, is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of 500 grams or more of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, use of a firearm in a drug trafficking offense and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, the news release said.

If convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for possession of the cocaine and heroin, a mandatory minimum of five years for possession of 500 grams or more of cocaine, a mandatory consecutive term of at least five years for possession of a firearm in a drug trafficking offense and a maximum of 10 years for possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.

Robertson was arrested on a federal criminal complaint on May 18. The complaint alleged that on Nov. 7, 2015, he was found to possess distribution quantities of cocaine and crack cocaine following a stabbing at Mohegan Sun casino, the news release said.

After his arrest, a court-authorized search of Robertson’s New London apartment found more than 2 kilograms of cocaine, some heroin, thousands of dollars in cash and other drug evidence, the release said.

The drugs seized have a street value of nearly $200,000, said Capt. Brian M. Wright, investigative services division commander of the New London Police Department.

A separate warrant was issued for Robertson for violation of his federally supervised release.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the New London Police Department and the Connecticut State Police’s Statewide Narcotics Task Force are investigating. to sell, possession of more than 1 ounce of heroin with intent to sell, criminal possession of a firearm and altering the serial number of a firearm after the Regional Community Enhancement Task Force executed a search warrant at 114 South Road.

Davila and an unidentified partner allegedly were distributing heroin and running a vehicle wholesaling operation from the property.

During the raid, police said they seized 5.5 ounces of heroin laced with fentanyl, a Hi Point .380 pistol with the serial number filed off, a digital scale, cutting agent and plastic bags, two cellphones, numerous vehicles and other items.

Davila was in one of three campers parked next to a large industrial garage when task force members arrived with the search warrant about 9:15 a.m., according to police.

Davila opened the locked door of the camper several minutes after the police announced their presence. He admitted there was at least 100 grams of heroin in the bedroom, according to the probable cause report.

The heroin was located under a mattress in a wooden compartment. The handgun, with 80 rounds of ammunition, was in a cabinet above the bed, according to the report.

Davila’s next court date is June 14.
