East Lyme — Terry Daniel Ryan, M.D., 82, of Bonita Springs, Fla, and Niantic, passed away May 21, 2016, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

Dr. Ryan was born on Nov. 1, 1933, in Springfiel­d, Mass., the son of the late Dr. Terence C. and Clare (McGoldrick) Ryan.

A graduate of Holy Cross College, he received a medical degree from Tufts University and a science degree from Harvard University. Dr. Ryan served his residency at Boston City Hospital and his fellowship with Dr. Wendell Hughes in New York. He was chief of ophthalmol­ogy at Baystate Medical Center and was the past president of the Hamden County Medical Society and served on the president council at Holy Cross.

An avid golfer and tennis player, he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances Fritzgeral­d Ryan; and two children, Daniel John Ryan of Anna Maria Island, Fla., and Julia Hallman and her husband, James C. Hallman, of Sarasota, Fla. He is also survived by a brother, John G. Ryan and his wife, Barbara, of Boston; a cousin, Arline Harkness; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. The funeral procession will assemble at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, from the funeral home, and proceed to an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Agnes Church, Haigh Avenue, Niantic. Interment will be private.
