Norwich Tech reaches CSC softball title game

Norwich — Freshman pitcher Hannah Smith scattered six hits and struck out 11 to lead second-seeded Norwich Tech to a 15-5 victory over No. 3 Platt Tech in the semifinals of the Constituti­on State Conference softball tournament on Tuesday.

The Warriors advance to the championsh­ip game for the first time in program history on Thursday, where they will face either No. 1 Wilcox Tech or No. 5 Putnam at DeLuca Field in Stratford at 3:45 p.m. The Wilcox Tech-Putnam game was rained out and will be played on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.

Norwich Tech led 4-1 before breaking the game open with seven runs in the fifth. Daria Stifel, the Warriors' lone senior, went 5-for-5 and drive in four runs to lead the offense while Vanessa Gumbs scored four runs and drove in a pair.

Boys' golf

• New London's Jordan Rogers was the medalist with a 38 as the Whalers beat Grasso Tech 169-229 in a nonleague match. Kyle White had a 41, Jack Madden shot 43 and Tim Glavan shot a 47 for New London (9-11). Seth Beebe led Grasso with a 53.

• Wheeler beat Windham 7-0 in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Small Division match. Mike Anderson was the medalist with a 43 and Jake Umphlett, Kody Lewis, Cody Johnson and Alec Rustici also won their matches for Wheeler (8-6, 5-3).

• Jack Ognisty of Stonington was the medalist with a 36 as the Bears beat East Lyme 7-0. Jack Glenn, Tyler Snelgrove, Will Cavaliere and Peter Holliman all won their matches with 41s for Stonington (15-2). Noah Wadsworth shot a 41 for East Lyme (2-10).

• Montville beat Waterford 4.52.5 in an ECC Medium Division match, winning the medal point 180-183. Montville's Chris Bouchard and Brian O'Sullivan shared medalist honors at 42 and Sam Gaboury halved his match for Montville (8-6, 5-5). Bruce Taggert and Kyle Kobyluck won matches for Waterford (119, 5-5) and Glen Faber halved with Gaboury.

Girls' tennis

• Fitch beat St. Bernard 4-3 on Monday in the regular-season and ECC Large Division finale for both teams. Samantha Cote won at No. 3 singles for Fitch (11-5, 7-5), which swept doubles play with the teams of Nina Lupo-Jillian Leger, Crystal Vinoya-Pracheta Talati and Cheanna Holloway-Sneha Kumar. Michaela Abate, Wendy Bessette and Anna McKinley won their matches for St. Bernard (7-8, 4-8).
