Hewett has failed; it’s time for Soto
The Day’s coverage of the debate between state Rep. Ernest Hewett and challenger Chris Soto was fair and accurate. However, two points raised in the debate deserve elaboration.
Hewett introducing only a few bills during his 12 years is a damning indictment of his legislative incompetence, lack of energy and unconcern for New London’s general welfare. That years could pass in between his introducing a bill to his statehouse colleagues is downright humiliating to New Londoners, who are by extension concomitantly perceived to be too lazy to initiate change.
Under Hewett’s stewardship, we are nothing more than impoverished sheep to be led in Hartford.
Then there is Hewett’s stentorian trumpeting of cultural magnet schools and racial balance in our classrooms. Other cities and towns concentrate their education budgets on teaching their children the rudiments of learning, but our New London schools idiotically focus on racial quotas and cultural affairs, which is why we inveterately rank dead last in educating our kids.
New London’s situation is dire, and thanks to Hewett’s apathy and racial fanaticism, getting worse by the day. Our first step toward improvement is voting on Aug. 9 for Chris Soto, a man who will represent us with vigor and common sense. Martin Crane New London
