Connecticu­t Tigers unload eight extra-base hits in 13-1 win

Burlington, Vt. — The Connecticu­t Tigers had a season-high eight extra base-hits Monday night, including three home runs, bashing their way to a 13-1 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in a New York-Penn League game at Centennial Field.

Austin Athmann kicked off the scoring for the Tigers (23-20) with a three-run home run to center field in the second inning.

Connecticu­t piled on with five runs in the fourth. Anthony Pereira and Victor Padron each delivered with RBI doubles, making it 5-0 Tigers, before Will Savage added the exclamatio­n point with a threerun home run to left, the first of Savage's career. Cole Bauml added a two-run home run in the ninth, also the first of his career.

Connecticu­t got solid pitching performanc­es from Alfred Gutierrez (four scoreless innings), Emanuel Chavez (two scoreless innings, three strikeouts) and Clate Schmidt (first career save, pitching three innings to close out the game.)

• Martin Figeuroa (Rhode Island) sent a tworun home run over the right field fence and across the street beyond it in the first inning of the Mystic Schooners' 7-1 victory over the Danbury Westerners at Rogers Park. Aaron Hill (UConn) led off the second with a double and came around on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Hartenstei­n to make it 3-0 and the Schooners (28-15) got another run in the third on a solo homer by Chase Lunceford (Louisiana Tech). Starting pitcher Joe Rivera (UConn) pitched 5.1 innings for the win.

• Clayton Shaw pitched a complete game and the Panera Pirates defeated Three Rivers 6-2 to clinch the regular-season title for the third straight year. Shaw struck out nine and walked none. Sean Donnelly doubled and singled, Eric Javor and Adam Novak added doubles and Scott O'Neill hit a solo home run in the first for Panera. JJ Crespo had a pair of hits to lead Three Rivers.

SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

• Waterford Red defeated Waterford Blue 9-6 in 8 innings Sunday in the "if necessary" game to win the league championsh­ip. Red scored four runs in the top of the eight inning to break a 5-5 tie. Matt Driscoll had three hits and Isaac Cuascut and Spencer Hoagland each had two hits and two RBI in the victory. Eddie Aledia had three hits for Waterford Blue. Blue forced the second game by winning 11-6 earlier in the evening, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to break open a 7-6 game. Aledia and Tommy Feliciano had two hits apiece.
