Tigers begin big road series at Hudson Valley with 6-2 loss
Wappingers Falls, N.Y. — Blaise Salter drove in a pair of runs for the Connecticut Tigers, bringing his season total to 42, but the Tigers opened a three-game series with a 6-2 loss to the Hudson Valley Renegades.
Salter trails Dean Green (44) for the franchise's single-season RBI record with 13 games to play.
Danny Woodrow continued his hot stretch, notching his fourth-straight multi-hit performance for the Tigers (35-28). He has 14 hits in his last 10 games and has scored eight runs during that time.
After the Tigers scored a run on Salter's 10th double of the season in the first, the Renegades (39-22) put up three in the third inning. Jim Haley drove a two-run double to left field to give the Renegades a 2-1 edge. Nate Lowe followed with his own run-scoring double to push the lead to 3-1.
Kyle Funkhouse took the loss for Connecticut.
The teams continue their series at 7:05 p.m. today.
Wolves coaches to return
• Defensive coordinator Jim Veltman and offensive coordinator Tracey Kelusky will return as assistant coaches for the New England Black Wolves for the 2017 season under head coach Glenn Clark. The staff helped guide the Black Wolves to a 10-8 record and a run to the East Division finals during the 2016 season.
Inducted into the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame in 2009, Veltman won eight NLL championships during his 16 year career with the Buffalo Bandits and the Toronto Rock. The first recipient of the NLL Sportsmanship Award in 2002, Veltman was named league MVP in 2004.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 NLL Entry Draft, Kelusky earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2001 and went on to become a five-time NLL All-Star. The MVP of the AllStar game in 2005, Kelusky won NLL championships with Calgary in 2005 and 2009. Kelusky will be inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2016 in September.
Battle of Stonington
• Russell Stevens of Colchester won the Battle of Stonington 5K in 16 minutes, 9 seconds, followed by Jeff Wadecki of Ledyard (16:43) and Sam Alexander of Sterling (17:02). Emma McInturff of Pawcatuck was the top women's finisher in 19:25. Diane McKeeft of Narragansett, R.I., was second (19:57) and Jeannette Mooney of Waterford third (21:21).
UConn field hockey third
• After a season in which it reached the Final Four, the UConn field hockey team picks up where it left off in 2015 season, being ranked No. 3 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Poll. The Huskies (22-1) will face seven teams this season that were feature in the preseason poll, including their season-opener at No. 11 Stanford on Friday.
