Whimsically named “The Cottage,” this meticulously maintained, expanded custom Cape is a labor of love and a slice of New England tradition. Owner Louise Dickens shares her story.

“In the early 90’s we were facing an empty nest and the almost paid mortgage of our tiny Montville home. Our accountant told us that we better have a baby or get another mortgage to reduce our tax burden. And let me tell you, we were done changing diapers! I had driven past the Quaker Hill property daily, and always dreamt of building a home there. When we finally saw the ‘For Sale’ sign go up, it didn’t take much to convince my husband to jump at the opportunity.

We started planning with the original idea of a cozy 1,800-square-foot Cape. Needless to say, after all was said and done, our modest home grew to nearly 3,000 square feet, with a full basement and a massive walkin attic above the three car garage! We wanted plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms so that our children and grandchildren could visit without feeling like they were crowded. By 1995, we had built our dream.”

Perfectly designed for entertaining, this magnificent updated home is centered around a brand new, large gourmet kitchen. Louise tells us that it has seen many family gatherings and an abundance of happy memories. It’s complete with custom cabinetry, two large pantries, and quartz counter tops. One side of the kitchen looks into a warm and sophisticated family room. The other opens to a spacious back yard and a delightful back deck with a powered awning. It’s a perfect spot to relax and have your morning coffee.

The lower level also includes a newly remodeled full bathroom and guest bedroom. Across the hall is a pristine formal living room with French doors that open to a lovely dining room, with several large windows allowing for a stunning view of the front green.

Upstairs, this home features four large bedrooms with spacious walk-in closets and plenty of storage. The master bedroom encompasses the entire east wing, and the newly remodeled master bath not only has a large walk-in shower but also a luxurious whirlpool tub, cherry cabinets, and granite vanity tops.

The entire interior was built with the finest materials; no expense was spared. From the travertine tiles to the imported Brazilian cherry wood floors, each room is tastefully elegant, yet expressly livable.

The outside landscape has been a well-loved part of the home. Prominently placed at the head of the driveway, a 240-square-foot screened gazebo greets visitors with its warm glow and copper spire. It’s a wonderful spot to sit back and relax with a good book. You’ll also find a quaint storage shed, detailed with shutters and window boxes. Nestled in the back corner is a small glass greenhouse that even has running water.

With more than two and a half acres of cleared land, there is plenty of space to enjoy the changing New England seasons. The back yard has been host to countless family reunions, baby showers, birthday parties, and weddings. The sprawling front green is spacious and lush, the kind of field where fathers and sons create memories of playing catch. The beautifully maintained landscape boasts well-manicured gardens and traditional stone walls. In the winter snow, it’s absolutely breathtaking.

For the history buffs, there is an antique well and root cellar, which were part of the farm that was once located on the property.

This home, located at 901 Vauxhall Street Extension in Quaker Hill, is truly a unique piece of New England heritage waiting for you to come home. We invite you to the Open House, Sunday, October 2, from 1 to 3 pm. For more information call Marilyn Lusher at REMAX Home Team 860-460-9559.
