John Giaconia Sr.
Middletown — John Warren Giaconia Sr., 93, of Hadlyme, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, in Middlesex Hospital, after a brief illness.
His wife of 55 years, Raffaella; and his sister, Marion Daniels, predeceased him.
He will be sadly missed by his family. He leaves two sons; his oldest son, John and wife, Deborah, his grandson, William and wife, Melissa, and great-grandchildren, Madeleine and Nicolas, and his grandson, Mark and wife, Zoraida, and great-granddaughter, Angela; Mark, his youngest son, wife, Monica, and three grandchildren, Nathan, Jordan, and Jack. He also leaves his dear friend and antiquing companion, Dorothy Czikowsky.
John was born on Oct. 20, 1922, in Springfield, Mass., the son of Anthony J. and Ellen (Stark) Giaconia. He was employed for many years as an electrician for the State of Connecticut highway department working on various projects over the years. He retired at age 55 and enjoyed 93 wonderful years of life exploring his many interests.
As a young man he enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, trapping and camping with his family at Maidstone Campground in Vermont. He was a master of all things, especially fine woodworking. He was well known for his axe handles and the art of hanging an axe. He particularly enjoyed collecting tools, antiques of every kind, and Royal Doulton Figurines. John always enjoyed a good game of golf and throwing horseshoes at the Fireman’s Field in Deep River.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme. Burial will be private as per his request.
