Tell whole story of city and college

-

Learning about Connecticut College’s payment in lieu of taxes to New London in David Collins’ column, “Connecticut College needs to give back to New London,” (Jan. 8) surprised me because of its smallness. Yet I cannot help but feel that only calling attention to this single figure unfairly collapses a rich and mending relationship into a cold transaction.

I am actively engaged with many organizations to improve the community and economy. In this work I see the fingerprints of Connecticut College everywhere. Examples of this include classes doing work in the community, student internships, supporting community initiatives, completing research and sharing facilities for meetings and events.

Connecticut College is active in the Thames River Innovation Places initiative. They supported the planning process with a critical amount that secured additional funds. As part of this work Connecticut College has hosted many meetings, providing audio visual services and meals.

So, yes, the college should give more money, but let’s not fall into the trap of telling ourselves the same old story of separateness and taking without giving. It is through recognizing the positives that we can transcend old patterns that hold New London back. Let’s tell the equally true story of a diverse community working together to improve our place.
