SUBMARINE SCHOOL EARNS RETENTION EXCELLENCE AWARD

Groton — The Naval Submarine School received the Navy Education and Training Command 2016 Retention Excellence Award when it re-enlisted 84.8 percent of its eligible personnel.

The Command Retention Team with Capt. Aaron Thieme, commanding officer of the sub school, formally raised the Retention Excellence Award Pennant on Friday.

The Retention Excellence Awards are given annually to commands which meet or exceed the standards set by their type of commands for that fiscal year. The Naval Submarine School last received the award in 2005.

NETC’s fiscal year 2016’s standard was to meet or exceed the 35 percent re-enlistment requiremen­t in Zone A, 51 percent in Zone B, 60 percent in Zone C, and have an attrition rate of 5 percent or less in Zone A, zero fail to submits in career waypoints and a minimum of 85 percent compliance with the Veterans Opportunit­y to Work, or VOW, Act of 2011.

Zone A represents sailors with six or fewer years of service. Zone B represents sailors with between six and 10 years of service. Zone C represents sailors with 10 to 14 years of service. NSS re-enlisted 24 Sailors in 2016, one in Zone A, 16 in Zone B, and seven in Zone C.

MACHINIST MATE SCHOOL GRADUATES 9

Groton — Nine sailors of Class 17010 graduated from Machinist Mate “A” School on Friday.

Fireman Laranbran Jones received the Torpedoman Plaque as class honorman and was meritoriou­sly advanced.

Machinist Mate “A” School is a 10-week enlisted apprentice training school providing basic knowledge and skills at the entry level in the machinist mate rating in shipboard 3-M, mechanical skills, 3-inch launcher operation, explosives, torpedo tubes and MK 48 ADCAP torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
