CGA men set record in 800 free

Worcester, Mass. — Coast Guard Academy's men's 800 freestyle relay team set a school record on the opening day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships Thursday night at WPI.

Ross Garrett, Mike Franco, Max McCall and Elliot Van Deren teamed up to place second in 6 minutes, 50 seconds, breaking the old mark of 6:50.86 set in 2016 by Garrett, Dan Moreno, Chase Sodemann and Patrick Jackson.

Will French added a fifth in the 3-meter diving competition (415.95 points) for the Bears, who sit in fourth place in the team standings after the first of four days.

In women's action, Kristen Young, Brooke Harkrader, Christine McCulla and Celia Marzinsky placed fourth in the 800 freestyle relay (7:45.64) for Coast Guard, which is also in fourth place after the opening day.

Boys' basketball

• Jeff Evans had 25 points, 14 rebounds and three assists as Waterford beat Windham 89-85. Mikey Buscetto had 14 points and 13 assists for Waterford (15-3) and Colin Shannon had 24 points and five steals. Also, Liam Spellman had 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals and Walker Sutman added eight points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

• Vladimir Pamphile had 17 points as Grasso Tech beat Ellis Tech 72-40. Jonathan Ramos scored 14 for Grasso (9-9).

• Eric Beavin scored the go-ahead basket with 30 seconds left to give Montville a 50-47 win over Griswold. Cam Collins had 13 points for Montville (5-14) and Seamus Barry, John Domijan and Beavin each scored 10.

Men's basketball

• Domenico Santiago had 19 points and 17 rebounds as Mitchell College trounced Newbury 96-74 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Geary McLeod had 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists for Mitchell (7-17, 7-8) and Hasani Williams had 10 points and 15 rebounds. Also, Alan Morgan had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Brayvon Young scored 21.

H.S. swimming

• Unbeaten East Lyme clinched at least a share of the ECC title with a 9275 win over Waterford. The Vikings (9-0, 8-0) can win the championship outright with wins over NFA and New London in a tri-meet at home on Friday. Robert Hahn (200-meter free, 2:23.07), Dennis Han (200 IM, 2:40.52), Eain Goolsbey (50 free, 28.22); Jack Wheeler (100 butterfly, 1:09.86), John Durham (100 free, 1:03.04), Jack Mucciarone (400 free, 4:44.71) and Ben Prouty (diving, 182.60 points) won individual events for East Lyme as did Thomas Emery (100 back, 1:28.41) and Brent Rutchick (100 breast, 1:38.29) for Waterford (1-8, 1-8).

• Hamden Hall edged Williams for the team title at the Connecticut Independent Schools Athletic Conference Championship meet on Wednesday, despite Williams winning every individual event. Will Jarrett, Jordan Legg, Cyrcus D'Arcy and Joe Sullivan won two events apiece for the Blues, Jarrett capturing the 200-yard IM (2:04.61) and 100 backstroke (1:01.86), Legg the 200 freestyle (2:03.73) and 50 free (24.54), D'Arcy the 100 free (55.66) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.03) and Sullivan the 500 free (5:41.35) and 100 butterfly (1:01.27). Those four also won the 200 medley relay (1:51.85) and broke a 21-year-old school record in the 400 freestyle relay, finishing in 3:31.89 to beat the old mark of 3:34.85 set in 1996.

• In the CISAC girls' meet, Williams finished third to Westover and Hamden Hall, picking up its lone win from Alessandra D'Arcy in the 500 free (6:17.85), although she did set a school record in the 100 fly (1:09.11) while placing second. The Blues also picked up a second from its 200 freestyle relay team of Elizabeth Li, Charlotte He, D'Arcy and Grace Linhares, and that same quartet placed third in the 200 medley relay. Linhares added a third in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free while Li was third in the 100 back and fourth in the 200 IM.

H.S. hockey

The Wethersfield co-op defeated the Eastern Connecticut Eagles 4-0 on Wednesday, scoring three of its goals on power plays. Troy Moeller made 28 saves for the Eagles (4-13).
