New London — Marcia Margolis, 87, of New London passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at the Groton Regency Center.

She was born in New London on Jan. 22, 1930, the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Kavarnos) Catogas. Marica was married to Spero Margolis on June 11, 1950. Spero passed away March 27, 1969.

Marica graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute (WMI) in New London and was a member of St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church. Marica enjoyed the company of family and friends. She was a devoted mother and grandmothe­r and on holidays everyone looked forward to her outstandin­g cheesecake. Marica, as a single mother raising three children, was also a business woman ahead of her time, managing a family rental property while working full time.

The family would like to thank the Groton Regency Center for Marica’s care and bringing joy to her life. And, they also extend many thanks to the Center for Hospice Care Southeaste­rn Connecticu­t.

She is survived by her son, Peter Margolis of New York; her daughters, Patricia Preston (Robert) of Uncasville and Kathryn Houston of Glastonbur­y; her sister, Barbara Costas of Rocky Hill; and her grandchild­ren, Brandon Tassone and Alexa Houston; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predecease­d by her sisters and their husbands, Mary A. Stratos (Harold) and Penelope Sotirelis (James).

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. A visiting hour will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n, 19 Ohio Ave., Norwich, CT 06360 or to St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St., New London, CT 06320.
